So, I've had yet another surgery. Three actually.
Another flap, this time on my left leg. The cause wasn't from a pressure sore this time, but rather an infection inside that tunneled it's way along various tracts under the skin. Actually, the skin was very healthy and everything looked great the whole time this was going on. I knew something was wrong though, I just didn't feel right, but I couldn't put my finger on exactly what the problem was. There just weren't any visible signs.
So, I decided to start myself on a hefty course of colloidal silver - about 1-2 tablespoons, twice a day. I figured if there was something going on inside, this might clear it up. Also, I was still a carrier of VRE, one of those hospital strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria I contracted during a previous hospital stay. I figured I'd give the colloidal silver a real test. If it cleared that stuff from my system, then I'd say there's something to it.
Well, there's something to it. Not only did it rid me of the VRE, but also completely stopped the infection that, by this time, had created a quite huge cavity inside my left upper leg and buttocks region. After the third day of taking the CS, the symptoms I was feeling started to go away. On the fourth day, I felt normal again.
I think at that point my body decided to purge itself of this big pocket of dead bacterial cells. It did so by breaking down the skin at the weakest point, the pressure point directly under my left ischial. When I noticed the skin starting to break down, I stayed off of it completely, but that didn't matter. It seems like my body was determined to get rid of this crap, and it did.
When the skin finally broke through, a lot of smelly dead funk came out, but that was it, nothing else but clean, clear, healthy looking drainage that would be expected from any open wound. I went to the doctor the next day and he wasn't concerned at all about an infection, there was absolutely no sign of any. Even though there was a hole, it looked clean and healthy, nor was there an elevation in white blood cell count in my bloodstream. So we scheduled a surgery date to fix everything and I left.
After the surgery, I awoke to be told that they didn't do the surgery. The tunneling had traversed much further than the doctor had previously thought. It actually tunneled across the middle of my butt to the other side. This was something very unexpected to the doctor and something he had never seen before. But, since it came so close to my anus, he decided to stop there to prevent any risk for infection. So, that surgery just turned into a slight debriedment of the wound, and I was left with a giant gaping hole in my butt with a vacuum attached to it.
For real, I had a vacuum pump hooked to my butt for a few weeks. This creates a negative pressure on the wound, sucking out all the drainage and helping to pull blood to the surface and improve healing time. They really are quite nice if you ever have a large gaping wound.
Now, because the repair surgery is going to come so close to my anus, the doctor recommended that I get a colostomy, temporarily, while this heals. That surgery took place fairly quickly, while I was still in the hospital from the original surgery. Now I have this god awful bag of crap hanging from my belly. I'm so glad it's temporary though. As soon as my butt heals I'll have another surgery to reverse the colostomy and I should be good to go again.
A couple weeks after the colostomy surgery, when that was all healed and healthy, they did the flap surgery that they had planned at the beginning. It has been about 4 weeks since then and it looks good and is healing great. There is one spot where the stitches didn't hold and the wound came apart. That spot is healing nicely though, but it may be a little longer than originally planned before I can be up and at em again. Maybe six weeks or so from now. This spot is right in the crease of my leg and butt, so it really needs to be healed before I start sitting up again. It's doing great though. It's healing very fast. I see changes in it almost daily.
One interesting thing about that surgery is that when they went to repair that part that had tunneled to the other side, it had healed. It had healed a lot. They couldn't get through to the other side where they previously had been able to. I think the doctor was quite surprised by this as well. My body regrew a lot of tissue over just a few weeks. Maybe it was the wound pump that helped, but after my body purged the dead stuff, it seemed determined to heal itself and was doing great. I could have completely healed myself from this wound, but that would have taken a lot of time, many many months stuck in bed. The quickest way was to surgically repair it.
So, if you're wondering why I haven't been around at all in the past couple months, there ya go. Three surgeries, several weeks in the hospital, and lots more at home stuck in bed. And, one more surgery to go...

I was obviously sorry to hear that news, although the way you shrug it off and put such a positive spin on it all is truly inspirational. Glad to hear that you are through the worst of it and on the mend! Speaking of recoveries, I was thrilled to hear how well Kristen did after her accident. She gave everyone a pretty good scare, didn't she?!
